SMOKE FROM HEATHCOTE DUMP

RESIDENTS COMPLAIN OF NUISANCE Complaints about the nuisance caused by smoke from a burning dump on the north bank of the Heathcote river, and near the Heathcote bridge, have been made by residents of St. Andrew’s Hill. They say that they have to close their windows at nights to keep out choking smoke which comes from the dumo as it smoulders, and is blown in their direction. The dumo is on private property, and has been smouldering for a week. St. Andrew’s Hill residents sav that the smoke fumes are paused by the burning of sawdust, oil. and pieces of old rubber tyres. Some time aso the dump was on fire, and the Christchurch Fire Brigade was called, but had considerable difficultv in preventing the sawdust and other material from smouldering. The dump aoparently started smouldering again the Sunday before last. The City Council’s attention has been drawn to the nuisance, and investigations are now being made.
