PROSPECTS AT ASHBURTON

RACING

LEXIA FAVOURED FOR TINWALD HANDICAP LUNARIA STANDS OUT IN STEEPLES The Ashburton Racing Club will conclude its autumn meeting at Ashburton to-day. There is every prospect of another excellent day’s racing. Except in the two jumping events good fields will parade in all races. The track has improved steadily all the week and will provide excellent going. Lexia and Wantwood are likely to dispute favouritism in the Tinwald Handicap. the principal handicap of the* day. Wantwood’s running in the Ashburton County Handicap last Saturday suggested that a mile should be well within his compass, and he will be one of the fittest candidates in the race. Lexia on the other hand is a proved miler, as was shown by her win in the Jockey Club Handicap at Riccarton in Imin 38 2-ssec with a good-class field behind her. She has risen over a stone in the weights since then, but she is still meeting .Wantwood on better terms than she did on that occasion. Double Cross, a hard and honest seldom runs a bad race, and is also likely to be in the picture. „ He has freshened up since he raced at Easter and is always a possibility at the distance. Joy Rosa, making' her reappearance after a spell, and Grill will have their supporters;- and both are capable, although Grill, can. hardly be rated as consistent. The light-weights, Chellow Dene. Deep Harmony, and Finalist, will all add interest to the race. Lunaria will have his first test as a steeplechaser in the Alford Hack Steeples. He looks the best recruit to steeplecnasing at Riccarton with the exception of Test Pilot, being a clean, fast jumper, and with a race on the flat and two ©ver hurdles in recent weeks, he will be much fitter than the others, the best of which appears to be Appeasement. The hack fields are well filled and should provide good contests, with the first day’s form a reliable guide. No scratchings were posted yesterday, but Falconbridge is an unlikely starter in the Tinwald Handicap and Pacific Star in the Fairfield Hack Handicap. Ballochbuie and Saigon w’ill be bracketed on the totalisator in the.Lagmhor Stakes, and are the only bracket on the programme.
