BRITISH-POLISH AGREEMENT
BEVIN’S STATEMENT IN COMMONS
(Rec. 7 pjn.) LONDON, May 5. The Foreign Minister, Mr Ernest Bevin, announced in the House of Commons that as a result of conversations he had had with the Polish Prime Minister, Mr Cyrankiewicz. the British Government had agreed to ratify the British-Polish financial agreement, which would facilitate the resumption of trade between Poland and Britain. Mr Bevin added that his conversations with the Polish Prime Minister had convinced him more than ever of the necessity of Poles in England to return to Poland and help in its reconstruction. When Mr R. A. Eden said the House had never seen the British-Polish agreement, Mr Bevin said its terms would be revealed. Reuter’s diplomatic correspondent says Britain’s decision to ratify the agreement, which was signed in London in 1946, will entitle the Polish Government to receive £4,000,000 of £7.000,000 in gold reserves lodged in Britain during the war. Britain will retain the remaining £3,000,000 against Polish war debts.
