FOOD CRISIS IN RUHR
THIRD WEEK OF SHORTAGE
“VIRTUAL BLACK-OUT” OF NEWS LONDON, May 5. The Allied Control Commission imposed a virtual news black-out on the food situation in the British zone as the Ruhr entered the third week of what is described as its worst and longest food crisis, says Reuter’s correspondent in Herford.
Public relations officers have been instructed to make no disclosures about the food situation, but sources close to leading officials report that the average daily ration in the Ruhr in the last fortnight has been about 800 calories. Reuter’s correspondent in Vienna reports that demonstrations which began with mild posters saying “We are Hungry,” developed into more widespread movements when crowds carried banners with the slogan: “Down With the Government.”
