PRODUCTION OF FERTILISER
FULL OUTPUT THIS WEEK The Christchurch Famine Emergency Committee wishes to see adequate supplies of fertiliser made available to farmers to facilitate the sowing of food crops. It has sent a telegram to the Minister of Agriculture (Mr E. L. Cullen) urging that every effort be made to secure labour for the works. » Mr R. McPherson reported to the committee on Monday that by to-day it was expected that fertiliser works at Hornby will be in full production, with priority being given to the preparation of superphosphate for sowing of wheat. Members would have read that overtime was being worked, he said. The staff had been busy unloading phosphate rock; but they would be available for full production early in the week and were expected to be augmented by student labour. He thought supplies would be going out by the end of this week. Mr C. S. Hammond said it was a pity that arrangements could not be made to build up supplies during slack periods. He knew the difficulty of keeping superphosphate in store in workable condition.
