MID WEEK SPORTS RESTRICTION

NO DECISION ABOUT CRICKET

_ LONDON, March 14. The Home Secretary (Mr Chuter Ede), announcing in the House of Commons the mid-week sports restrictions, including a temporary cessation of mid-week football—restrictions designed to help meet the production cric-S-Mid he thought it unlikely that wimoledon would attract a crowd, but he was seeing officials next week. He would also see the M.G.C. next week about cricket.

Mr Chuter Ede said that a four-day test at Trent Bridge attracted a bigger attendance than 10 days’ racing at Nottingham. There was a substantial difference between greyhound racing and horse racing. Bloodstock was exported m 1946, mainly to the dollar countries.

Unlike all other games, first-class cricket is essentially a mid-week game, says “The Times” in a leading article. “To restrict it is Io kill it. Cricket has a special place in national—indeed the Commonwealth—tradition, and it is impossible to believe that a good case can be made on industrial grounds for its destruction.”
