ACCIDENTS

CAR PLUNGES INTO RIVER ONE WOMAN KILLED AND ONE INJURED (P.A.) WANGANUI. March 16. One woman was killed and another injured when the motor-car in which they were travelling from Parikino to Wanganui early on Sunday morning left the road on a bad corner, and plunged down a bank into the Wanganui river. The other occupants of the car escaped with cuts and abrasions, but the body of the woman had not been recovered late to-day. It was impossible to establish whether it was still in the car. which is in 15 feet of water. The victims were:— Killed Mrs N. R. Wiig. 26, employed as a housekeeper. Injured Mrs D. McGonagle, Durie Vale Wanganui, cuts, other injuries, ana severe shock, condition not serious. MOTOR-CYCLIST AND SISTER INJURED Thomas Burgin* aged 20, of Swannanoa, suffered head injuries when the motor-cycle he was riding was involved in a collision with a bus in Merivale lane yesterday. He was admitted to the Public Hospital at 3.40 p.m. His sister, Miss S. Burgin, who was a pillion passenger on the motorcycle, was also injured, and was admitted to the hospital.

WOMAN BREAKS LEG IN FALL

Mrs T. Clarke, of 45 Ward street, was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital at 8.10 p.m. on Saturday suffering from a broken leg. She slipped on a peach on the footpath in Tennyson street. TWO MEN INJURED When a motor-car in which they were travelling left the road at Moncks Bay about 1 a.m. on Saturday, two men were injured. The driver, Desmond Scalmer, aged 23, of 132 Moorhouse avenue, suffered head injuries and was admitted to the Public Hospital. Lawrence Edgar Whall, of 5 Montreal street, was treated as an outpatient. Mr Scalmer’s condition was reported to be satisfactory last evening. BOY BATHER INJURED BY BROKEN BOTTLE While bathing in the Ashburton river-bed below the Main South road traffic bridge yesterday afternoon, Keith Pearson, aged 6 years, son of Mr and Mrs R. Pearson, Belt road, Ashburton, received a long jagged cut on the abdomen from a broken bottle. After six stitches were inserted in the wound by a doctor, the boy was taken to his home.
