BALMORAL STATE FOREST

Sir, —In answer to the statement in “The Press” concerning the Balmoral State Forest Service, we worked there from November till February and the headquarters staff is not half the number stated. The thinning out operations were carried out on a big scale on a nine-acre patch of carrots, and not of trees, as stated. A staff of 70 men may be assembled when camp conditions and wages are improved. At this time, it is a moving staff. Until men are given better camp conditions and wages they will not stay longer than one pay period. We hope this helps to improve things for workers following us.—Yours, etc., FOUR WORKERS. Timaru. March 10, 1947. [The Conservator of Forests, Christchurch. Mr R. H. Murray, had no comment to make when this letter was referred to him.]
