AMATEURS RACE AT AUCKLAND
CANTERBURY JUNIOR’S SUCCESS
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 9. F. T. Tredrea and E. L. G. Hughes, of Auckland, and the junior, L. P. Locke, of Canterbury, were easily the outstanding performers in fields of fine quality when the New Zealand amateur cycling championships were held on Saturday at Western Springs Stadium, before about 6000 spectators. Each of the three did exceptionally well. Tredrea won a gruelling 10-miles senior paced championship by more than three laps in setting a New Zealand record for the event. Hughes, by riding second to Tredrea in the race, broke a string of five successive victories in national championship cycling events in the last two months, and Locke, by winning the junior half-mile unpaced and the junior five miles paced championships, amply demonstrated that he is one of the best prospects New Zealand amateur cycling has seen in many years. D. Yeates, of Palmerston North, who rode for the West Coast, North Island Centre, beat the title-holder, A. W. Stonex, in the 500 metres unpaced championship in unusual circumstances. To decide the title-holder, three match races between the two were proposed. In the first of them Stonex was forced to withdraw just after the two had entered upon the last furlong, the only timed portion of the race when Yeates cut across in front and accidentally tore about a dozen spokes from Stonex’s front wheel. Both men stopped riding and shook hands, but a little later Yeates rode across the finishing line. Stonex entered a protest against Yeates’s 1 win on the ground that Yeates had cut across too sharply, but the protest was disallowed. In the second 4ieat Stonex’s tactics were faulty when he let Yeates get about 3 length in front. Approaching the spring. Stonex accelerated, (but Yeates also made a jump, and in a very fast finish the Aucklander was narrowly beaten.
