AWARDS AT DAHLIA SHOW
RECORD ATTENDANCES Record crowds visited the Caledonian Hall yesterday for the second day of the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s show, the Dahlia Society’s South Island show being held in conjunction. Blooms retained. their freshness and presented as fine a showing yesterday as on the opening day. Dahlia Society trophies were awarded as follows:—Presidert’s perpetual challenge trophy (six varieties giant dahlias). Father J. T. Taylor; secretary’s challenge trophy (nine varieties miniature dahlias), O. W. B. Anderson; New Zealand Dahlia Society’s South Island championship (nine varieties pompons), C. R. Hunt (Palmerston North); Toon trophy (six varieties giant decorative dahlias), Mrs M. C. Mor?:an; Canterbury Dahlia Circle’s trophy six varieties miniature decorative dahlias, S G. Prebble. Championships awarded by the Dahlia Society were:—Large decorative, V. G. Mason (H.M. Queen Elizabeth); vase of minatures, T. C. de Latour (Judith White; vase of pompons,. C. R. Hunt. Palmerston North (Little Conn, a dark red); exhibition cactus, Mrs M. C. Morgan (Victoria): vase of mediums, Mrs Morgan (Dorothea Lyons, a rich apricot shading to saffron). The premier bloom ot the gladiolus classes on the second day was G. Stubley’s Nellie Saunders. This bloom, which was the first-day champion, had opened out another floret, the quality of lower florets still being high The gladiolus was named by Dr. McKillop after - a neighbour who took a keen interest in his garden and hybridisation, in which he has had many successes
