YEARLING SALES AT TRENTHAM

2000 GUINEAS PAID FOR COLT BIDDING RESTRICTED From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, January 24. With a few exceptions, there was little enthusiasm among bidders on the final day of the national sale of thoroughbred yearlings at Trentham to-day. Withdrawals were fairly heavy and the day’s offering was the smallest of the sales, while passings were also more frequent than at previous offerings. For a particularly fine type of colt by Balloch from Black Cat, the dam of the good winners in Ruri and Red Cat. the bidding started at 500 guineas and rose rapidly to 1000 guineas. The purchase was made on account of Mr A. Louisson. of Christchurch, at 2000 guineas.

There was diminished Australian competition and this affected the market. Only four lots made four figure sums. Next to the top-priced lot was 1200 guineas for a Balloch—Brief Melody colt bred by Mrs G. E. Grigg, of Longbeach, the buyer being Mr M. Millar, of Palmerston North. An attractive filly by Coronach from Dahis, the dam of Sir Bernard and Treneere. sold on account of Miss N. G. Parris, of Timaru, was pur-

chased by Mr W. R. Stead, of the Sasanof Stud, for 1000 guineas, and a bay colt by Beau Vite from Lady’s Bouquet from the same family as Lowry Bay brought 1025 guineas. The aggregate for the 53 lots sold during the day was 23,275 guineas, representing an average price of 439 guineas. The aggregate for the 301 lots sold at the sales was 183,590 guineas, and the average price was just less than 608 guineas. Last year 270 lots were sold for 152,140 guineas, the average price being 563£ guineas. Although the average price and the aggreate this year were records for the sales, the tone of the sale on the last day suggested that the market had very nearly reached saturation point, and showed that there was no room for inferior lots. The principal sales during the day were as follows: On account of W. Breed, Otahuhu, b c by Balloch—First Flutter, J. Fryer, Melbourne, 580gns; b c by Ninth Duke-7 Hunting Crop, Miss E.
