WELLINGTON CLUB

RACING

PROSPECTS FOR TODAY INTEREST IN TRENTHAM STAKES From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON. January 24. The track is likely to remain firm for the final day of the Wellington Racing Club s summer meeting, at Trentham tomorrow, and in spite of three days’ racing the fields are still strong in all events. There is every prospect of a memorable contest in the Trentham Stakes, in which the three-year-old. Beau le Havre. will meet Golden Souvenir. Soneri, and Bruce, with a fifth runner. Longsword, who does not measure up to the weight-for-age class in tiie field. The race may develop into a battle of tactics, in which case the race will lose some of its value as ft®? merit * Bruce will definitely 5 Ta „ e race * having been scratched lor tne Summer Handicap at 10.20 p.m. i2". day * He win be ridden bv C. T. Wilson. With Bruce in the field. L. J. LHis will not be able to ride Golden Souvenir.

The race seems to be open and it would be a bold racegoer who would declare decidedly in favour of Golden Souvenir. Soneri, or Beau le Havre. As Golden Souvenir will not have the services of Ellis, Beau le Havre mav be the most favoured horse. He combines Brilliance with stamina. Soneri is the most brilliant of her sex seen for many Jears. and her memorable struggle with Golden Souvenir in the Canterbury Cup distan’r^’ 1 n* her a £ ility beyond sprint Br V ce couid sprint well enough diclh “ the Great Easter Har >- ai ? d hls x a PPearance simply adds further interest to the race. There jS d >. eal ° f local su PPort for Indian Gold, which ran a good race in the Weilington Cup and is an improver. Kerry Lad raced poorly on Wednesday, but is obviously capable of better form. Class is well represented in the City Handicap, in which Da Vinci will attempt to beat most of the Telegraph Handicap field again with a rise of 71b in weight. Master Dash has not run since the first ® ay of the meeting, but looks particularly well, and with only 21b more he may go close to repeating his last year’s success. The top weights may be most troubled by Derene and Theocritus, both of which are brilliant on their day. Derene’s failure in the Telegraph Handicap was unexpected, but she may redeem her i-eputation to-morrow. Theocritus finished splendidly in the Telegraph Handicap and was only just beaten. Specialist and Peter Gazelle are also fast, although the latter’s prospects would improve considerably with an easier track. Riding Engagements
