AUSTRALIAN TALLOW SHORTAGE
MANUFACTURERS HOLD STOCKS (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 23. Manufacturers of tallow said to-day that the Government could not force them to sell at the Australian pegged price of £2B a ton when it could be sold overseas for up to £l3O a ton. They admitted that there were adequate stocks of tallow in store in Sydney and the country districts. New South Wales is in the middle of a soap famine, which particularly affects laundry soap and the cheaper grades. Apparently the manufacturers are prepared to withhold supplies, knowing that the tallow will keep indefinitely. Last October the Federal Government placed an embargo on exports of tallow except that made under Government licence. The manufacturers are keen to have the embargo removed so that they can compete on the international market, but this would mean a continued shortage of soap here or an immediate increase in price*.
