SERIOUS DROUGHT IN N.S.W.
SYDNEY FOOD SUPPLY THREATENED MEAT AND VEGETABLES SHORT (Rec. 11.45 pan.) SYDNEY, Jan. 23. Continuation of the drought in New South Wales country areas is threatening Sydney’s main food supply. Live stock totals have dwindled to such an extent that a shortage of many essential foodstuffs is feared. * Cheese and butter production is only half of normal, there is an acute shortage of prime grades of meat, milk may be rationed, and vegetables are in short supply. Seasonal shortages of eggs and poultry, of which there ard now plenty, may soon complicate matters. The Minister of Customs (Senator B. Courtice) said in Canberra that the drought position was causing the Government much concern. Commonwealth subsidies to stricken dairy farmers are expected.
