STATEMENTS NOT BELIEVED

MR DOWNIE STEWART’S COMMENT (P.A.) DUNEDIN, January 23. “The statements attributed to Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler are so obviously contradictory to all public utterances of Dominion Prime Ministers of the time, especially the late Mr W. F. Massey, who was Prime Minister of New Zealand in 1921. that I think little notice should be taken of them,” said Mr W. Downie Stewart when the statement by Dr. Butler was referred to him. Mr Stewart was a member df the Massey Cabinet in 1921. “I was closely associated with Mr Massey at that time,” added Mr Stewart, “and I am confident that Dr. Butler has either been misreported or that it can be regarded as simply a canard.”
