GOOD FINISH BY BAYFORT
WINNER OF NURSERY HANDICAP
Bayfort, the winner ot the Nursery Handicap at Trentham, was making his second appearance in a race. He finished well to beat the more experienced Night School by half a head. Bayfort is bv Broiefort from Bayadeer, by Phaleron Bay from the imported mare Bayloch, which was the dam of four winners, including Wrenside, a winner of 12 races in Austraha. Bayloch was also the granddam of Omapo and Haerepo, both of which were bred at Riccarton and sold to Australia. Bayfort was sold at Trentham as a yearling for 320gns, and is trained at Washdyke by E. J. Ellis. On the second day of the< current yearling sales, a halfsister by Neptune to Bayfort was passed in at 200gns. Good Races
The veteran Lowry Bay has run two good races at Trentham. On Cup day he finished fast to beat Fortune’s Smile for third place in the Anniversary Handicap, while last Wednesday he showed much of his old dash to finish about a head behind the third horse, Merrv Robin, in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap. Lowry Bay is a much-travel-led and much-raced gelding, but he still retains his keenness in his races. Bad Luck
Ruling Moment has.now had five second placings over hurdles. He was rather unlucky in the Mungaroa Hurdles at Trentham on Wednesday. After disposing of Skyhawk he made his only faulty jump during the race at the last hurdle, and the ground he lost cost him the race. The winner, Rink, has superior speed on the fiat. x. ll was bad luck for Ruling Moment that the only two fences Rink jumped well were the last two. Unable to Get Run
After having only one horse behind him at the distance, and being unable to get a run anywhere in the last furlong, Kartikeya put in a phenomenal burst of speed m the last 50 yards of the Nursery Handicap that carried him within a head of the third horse. If he had been able to obtain any sort of a run in the straight nothing else would have- had a chance ?.^ i J ceya ’ s next race W be in the Middle Park Plate, and, with the benefit of his recent racing, he is likely to play a prominent part in the race. Fifth Minor Placing Night School registered his fifth minor placing for the season when he was narrowly beaten by Bayfort in the Nursery Handicap at Trentham on Wednesday. Night Schol is a rather washy chestnut gelding, by Nightly .from Schoolgirl, and wa§ bred by Mr G. H. Humphries, of Yaldhurst, who raced his dam with some i- 9 n bree<J i n g and appearances Night School is not one that would normally be expected to perform so consistently in early two-year-old races.
