PROFESSOR G. C. BILLING’S
CAREER "The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, January 17. Dr. Geoffrey Chandos Billing, B.A. (Adelaide), Ph.D. (London), who has been appointed to the Chair of Economics at the University of Otago in succession to the late Dr/ R. W. Souter, has been acting-head of the Economics Department at the University of Otago since April, 1946. Dr. Billing is a graduate of the University of Adelaide, where he took his B.A. degree in 1922. He was granted a free passage to London and entered the London School of Economics in 1923 qs a research student and candidate for the degree of Ph.D. In 1925 illness prevented him from completing his course, and he returned to Adelaide. In 1927 Dr. Billing was appointed tutorial class lecturer at the University of Tasmania and for three years lectured to W.E.A. classes. In 1930 he was appointed lecturer in economics at the University of Otago. The grant of a Rockefeller Scholarship in 1932 enabled Dr. Billing to return to London, and in 1934 he was awarded the Ph.D. degree. While in Britain he visited various factories, and also made short trips to Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. On his return to Dunedin the scope of his work widened. In addition to acting as head of his department, he has been a representative of the lecturers* on the Professorial Board and for two years acted as president of the Lecturers’ Association. Dr. Billing has had published a large number of articles and papers which have received considerable attention in the field of economics.
