NORTH ISLAND FISHING
CONSERVATOR GIVES REVIEW
GOOD CATCHES IN SOME AREAS
(P.A.) ROTORUA, January 17. Fishing in the Rotorua area, although patchy, has yielded some catches of very well-conditioned fish. Anglers have not been getting large bags, but the sport has been good, said the Conservator of Fish and Game (Mr S. McNamara). Lake Rotoiti, round the bays, has yielded well-con-ditioned fish, anglers taking up to four and five, the largest of which was 91b. Fishing at Hamurana outlet has been patchy, but the fish were infgood condition. while at the mouth or rhe Awahou fishing is also good, the largest fish taken there being BJlb. Anglers who have been fishing at Lake Okataina have taken some fine trout, and the lake promises good sport later. There have been one or two nice catches taken round Mourea, the largest fish being 7Jlb. Trolling parties generally have not been meeting with much success in the Rotorua district. The condition of the fish at the northern end of Lake Taupo is good, although . not many large fish have been taken even by trolling parties. In the Whanganui stream fishing has been particularly bright. Most of the fish are feeding on smelts, and some wonderful rises have been seen during the day. The southern end of Taupo, at Tokaanu, has gone off considerably during the last few days.
At Motoupa and in the TaurangaTaupo area, sport has been good, and some good catches have been taken. There has not yet been a great run of fish in the Waikato, where, in most cases, fishing is hard, but those taken were all in good condition. At Waikare good, small bags of fish up to 121 b are reported. There are not many anglers in this area. Fishing there is improving and should be better within the next few weeks.
The condition of the fish in the Whakatane area is rather poor, with low water and high temperatures. Anglers report large numbers of under-limit fish in the Tarawera river. A few reasonable catches are reported. In the lower Rangftaiki, near Edgecumbe, there are a small number of trout, but none has been caught so far. Anglers in the Opotiki area are few and far between, and fishing generally is not easy. There have been no large bags, but reasonable sport is available both from snoon in the Tarawera and fly in the Waimana and Whakatane.
