BOWLS
WEST COAST CENTRE’S TOURNAMENT
From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, January 17. The annual fours tournament of the West Coast Bowling Centre opened on Grey mouth and district greens to-day, in perfect weather, and the greens were at their best after receiving a special preparation. Because of the popularity of the tournament, the West Coast Centre has this year deleted the pairs from its tournament, concentrating solely on a fours competition. Forty-eight rinks, 16 ot them from Canterbury clubs, are taking part in the tournament. There were some keen, close, and exciting matches in the three rounds played to-day. Last year’s winning rink, skipped by D. Francis (Westport), is not defending its title, as it was unable to make the trip. There are several interesting competitors, including two winning skips at Dominion tournaments—C. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.) and F. White (Runanga), last year’s winning skip, but on this occasion both of them are skipping different rinks. Both Spearman and White suffered defeats -to-day, the former by a Grey mouth rink skipped by J. S. Robertson, and the latter by W. G. Ives (Cashmere), after a great game, the final score at the call of time being 16-15. In Section A there were three rinks, with successes in all three games played to-day: W. G. Ives (Cashmere), T. Crankshaw (Greymouth), and E. Cockroft (Kia Toa, Timaru). In Section B, R. Sansom'(Grey mouth) and J. Whyte (R.SA, Christchurch), each scored three wins. In section C, Madsen (Opawa) and F. Chambers (Sumner) had three wins, while in section D, J. Breeze (Hokitika) and K. Mountford (Blackball) won all three matches. Rinks with two successes were,: L. G. Mercer (Grey mouth), J. S. Robertson (Greymouth), C. Spearman (R.S.A., Christchurch), P. Thompson (Karoro), A. Maskill (Blaketown), J. Hadcroft (Runanga), A. Benjamin (Hokitika), D. Maunder (Takaka), A. Warnes (Greymouth), H. Jennison (Blackball), I- Kitchin (Runanga), E. R. Moss (Greymouth), W. Martyn (Nelson), H. Pattinson (Dunollie), E. Griffiths (Westport), and A. M. Walters (Greymouth). Rinks which won only one game were those of W. Holt (Karoro), J. Crawford (Hornby), R. B. Smith (Greymouthh J. Smith (Barrington), W. Britten (Sydenham), S. R. Johns (Canterbury), F. Morgan (Nelson), F. White (Runanga), and C. Taylor (Sydenham). The visitors were welcomed at the Greymouth green by the president of the West Coast Centre (Mr J. Stokes).
