LIBERTY

“THE RAKE’S PROGRESS” In 1735 William Hogarth, the celebrated English engraver and painter, produced eight engravings, which he called “The Rake’s Progress.” The film of that title, which commences a return season in Christchurch at the Liberty Theatre to-day, is a modern version of that theme. Starring Rex Harrison, it follows the career of Vivian Ken way from, boyhood, through escapade after escapade, and from Oxford to World War 11, and includes his entanglements with three lovely women—played by Lilli Palmer. Jean Kent, and Margaret Johnston. Harrison invests his role of the rake with a surprising amount of sympathy and charm, considering the nature of his unscrupulous adventures. He makes amends in the climax of the film by giving his life as a soldier in World War II to save an important bridge in France. The second feature. "Pioneers of the Frontier,” stars Bill Elliott and Linda Withers.
