FOREIGN SERVICE REGULATIONS
CONDUCT CODE FOR BRITISH OFFICIALS PUBLICATION IN LONDON (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, January 14. The London Gazette announces “Regulations for His Majesty’s Foreign Service.” This conduct code, the first of the kind to be published, bars members of Britain’s Foreign Service from standing for Parliament and lists negligence with official documents among what may be “grave disciplinary offences.” The regulations say that marriage to a non-British national may diminish an officer’s utility to zero. A member who becomes discreditably involved in a divorce suit may have to resign. A woman member who marries will normally have to resign. The code fixes salaries ranging from £3500 for permanent under-secre-taries and heads of major missions to £275 for third secretaries, grade 9. The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs may make appointments and promotions without reference to seniority of membership.
