CORNWELL CUP
LYTTELTON WINS THIRD RACE
(P.A.) AUCKLAND. January 15. Lyttelton won the third Cornwell Cup trial sailed off Bayswater this afternoon over a windward and leeward course In steady rain, which flattened an otherwise choppy sea caused by a fresh southerly wind. Auckland was second, 33 seconds astern, and Plimmerton, which passed several boats x>n the last round, was only 15sec behind Auckland. The fourth race will be sailed to-mor-row morning, when another win to Auckland will finish the contest, but if this does not happen it is likely that a fifth race will be sailed during the afternoon. Lyttelton covered Auckland board for board on the last beat, while Plimmerton caused excitement as they weathered Christchurch, New Plymouth, and Akaroa, to finish close astern of Auckland. Lyttelton had the race in hand comfortably, and interest centred in the tussle between Auckland - and Plimmerton. but the Auckland boat was well handled to stave off the challenge for second place. Aloha, which was drawn by the Tauranga crew, had a bent rudder gudgeon, which was not discovered until too late to make the necessary repairs and Tauranga took no part in the race. Following were the finishing times:— Lyttelton, 3hr 6min 52sec; Auckland, 3hr 7min 25sec; Plimmerton, 3hr 7min 40sec; Christchurch, 3hr 9min 7sec; New Plymouth. 3hr 9min 14sec; Akaroa, 3hr 9min 52sec; Otago. 3hr lOrnin 15sec; Wellington, 3hr 12min 41sec; Wanganui. 3hr ,13min 48sec; Manukao, 3hr 14min 22sec: Hamilton, 3hr 14min 25sec; Paremata, 3hr 16min 47sec.
