AMERICAN SEAMEN BAYONETED
JAPANESE ACTION ON SUBMARINE
(Rec. 11 p.m.) TOKYO, January 14. How the crew of a Japanese submarine, while bayoneting the crew of an American merchantman which the submarine had sunk, were interrupted by appearance of an American aircraft, was related before the War Crimes Tribunal in Tokyo by one of the 24 survivors of the merchantman’s 100 men. The witness said’ that a group of Americans with their hands bound behind them remained on the submarine’s deck when an order to crash dive was given. One American managed to free his hands and find a knife in another’s pocket, and he cut about six men loose before the group were swept into the sea. Before the appearance of the aircraft about 60 Americans who had been taken from lifeboats had been led singly behind the conning tower, bayoneted, and then thrown into the sea.
