DAIRY WORKERS’ DISPUTE

STRIKE CONSIDERED UNLIKELY

The report from Auckland that a strike of dairy workers in the Waikato was likely to take place was discounted iff Christchurch yesterday. The explanation was made that an assurance had' been given the employers during the Conciliation Council proceedings in Wellington last week that no action would be taken by the w< kers pending the resumption of the council on January 27.

Mr G. Morrow, president of the Canterbury branch of the Dairy Factory Workers’ Union, said yesterday that he ■was unable to comment on the report, as all press statements were, by arrangement. to be made by Mr L. D. Robertson, genera] secretary of the New Zealand union.

“After three days of conciliation, an adjournment had been found necessary in order finally to determine if wage rates can be satisfactorily settled,” said Mr Robertson in a statement in Wellington on Friday. “Fair progress has been made in other matters. but we find that the employers’ offer on wages cannot be agreed to. The Conciliation Council has. consequently. been adjourned till January 27-28, when it is hoped that a satisfactory agreement can be reached.*
