TAXI DRIVERS’ BOYCOTT
CENTRAL STATION IN SYDNEY
PROTEST AGAINST BAN ON MULTIPLE HIRING
(Rec. 7.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 13. Sydney taxi drivers boycotted the Central Railway Station to-day as a protest against a ban on multiple hiring. A similar boycott last week resulted in the enforcement of the ban being delayed, but the authorities are determined this time to carry it through.
All taxi services are expected to be suspended on Wednesday afternoon when a stopwork meeting of drivers is to be held. This morning a number of taxi men who refused single fares at the railway station were booked by the police. Members of a special squad and traffic police toured the city to divert empty taxis to the station, but union pickets were soon busy warning drivers to keep away. By noon not one taxi was sighted on the Central Station rank, but police and transport officials were there in force The men blame the State Government for not introducing legislation to take the place of the National gency Regulations, permitting tiple hiring, which expired at tne ena Failure to comply with the new ©rder can cost a taxi driver his liceiic .
