SPRINGFIELD

Sir, —Recently I paid a visit to Springfield, where, many years ago, I was a pupil at the old school, which I noticed was still standing. I felt dismayed and sad indeed to see the neglected condition of my old.home town. The beautiful Wellingtonian tree, towering high in the air in the Anglican Church grounds, which is nearly 70 years old, has been mutilated, evidently by the Power Board. Many other beautiful trees were planted in those early days. What is the cause of such neglect? Is it because it appears to have become more or less of a railway settlement? I presume there is still a local county council. Surely, with snigging chains and a tractor, all that disfiguring broom could be removed without much trouble.—Yours, etc., EX-PUPIL. . January 13, 1947.
