WORK RESUMED IN FACTORIES

LESS ABSENTEEISM NOTED

Most Christchurch factory workers apparently decided that the holidays ended for them yesterday. Fabtories opened yesterday after Christmas and the New Year with an average attendance of about 90 per cent, of workers; but some which opened last week had attendances of about 40 per cent, on Thursday and 50 per cent, on Friday. These figures were given yesterday by the secretary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R. T. Alston). He said that yesterday most factories had practically a full attendance of their male employees. Generally there was a smaller attendance of female workers. One employer said the rate of absenteeism among his fefnale workers was the highest he had ever experienced. A number ot workers were known to be stranded in the North Island awaiting transport.
