VISIT BY AMERICANS LIKELY CLAIMS OF CHRISTCHURCH TO BE PRESSED Information has been received in Christchurch that two members of the Ameri£an Davis Cup team, Gardnar Mulloy and Talbert, may make a brief visit to New Zealand early m February. The Management committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association decided last evening to press the claims of Christchurch as having first claim to any match M which the Americans take part The president (Mr J. Mercer) said no detailed information was yet available except that the visit was bound to be brief. Auckland had already had a visit from the full American team, and it was reasonable to give other centres the ooportunity of seeing these fine players Canterbury should have first claim because it had gone to much trouble and expense to provide seating accommodation, and a crowd of up to 4000 could now be accommodated with little difficulty at Wilding Park. No other association except Auckland had comparable facilities, and it had to be remembered that temporary seating for crowds of more than 1500 or so was very expensive to build. He saw no rm. aon why Christchurch should not be the venue if the Americans made only one appearance; if they made more, Christchurch should certainly be one of the centres chosen. CHALLENGES FOR SHIELD AND CASKET The management committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association decided last evening to challenge for both the Wilding Shield and Nunneley Casket, both of which are held by the Hutt Valiev Association. February 14 and 15 will be proposed as the dates for the matches, which are dependent on Hutt Valley refusing challenges from Otago and Wellington. .
