INDIAN DAWN’S GOOD _EFFORT SLOW START ADDS TO HANDICAP Indian Dawn put up an outstanding performance to win the Apprentices’ Handicap at Trentham on Saturday. She started from the outside of the field and lost five lengths at the start. She began to move round the field at the half-mile, and was up with the leaders when they entered the straight, reaching the front a half-furlong further on, and holding on to survive a strong challenge from Emerge over the last 100 yards. Gyration, a brother to Barrage, made a strong run to cut Czarina out of third place: but the rest, except for Precedency (which lost his rider at the five furlongs) had every chance. " - When the field settled down, Clyde Bridge and Czarina were in front, followed by Gyration, Iron Duke, Patunui, and Emerge. Indian Dawn went round the leaders round the top turn, and was on the outside of Clyde Bridge and Czarina at the straight entrance, with Gyration, Iron Duke, and Emerge all handy. Indian Dawn soon reached the front, but had to be ridden out to hold off Emerge, which also covered extra ground. Gyration beat Czarina narrowly. Iron Duke, Clyde Bridge. Patunui, and Royal Sward

A Runaway Win Provider scored a runaway win in the Linden Hurdles, going to the front with five furlongs to run, and quickly opening up a big gap on the field. He was eight lengths clear entering the straight, and at no stage looked like having his lead reduced in the run home. Ruling Moment did best of the others, and added another minor placing to his credit. He went up into third place with a mile to run, and took second place when Skyhawk began to weaken three furlongs from home, and held on well in the straight. Battle Chief at no stage was going like a winner, and with half a mile to run was giving the leaders about eight lengths. Although he made ground from that stage, he could make no impression in the straight and Tid-apa, with a late run, caught him on the post and dead-heated for third place. The well-backed Skyhawk pulled his way to the front early, but had every chance, and gave a disappointing display. Skyhawk, Provider, and Ruling Moment were the first to show out, and past the stands Skyhawk was setting tn'e pace from Provider, Ruling Moment, and Battle Chief, with Red Glare and Tidapa following closely. At the seven furlongs, Provider rah up to Skyhawk and at the five had worked clear of him. Ruling Moment followed two lengths behind, with three lengths to Battle Chief, Rink, and Red Glare. Provider increased his lead round to the straight, where Sky-1 hawk started to tire, and Battle Chief and' Tid-apa started to improve. Provider won as his rider pleased, and Ruling Moment held on for second place, while Tid-apa just caught Battle Chief on the post to dead-heat for third place. Skyhawk was next, then Rink and Red Glare. Won Hack Sprint Well Castlebrae won the Muritai Handicap narrowly but well, with the next four horses all well up. A strong finishing run by Cressida, which suffered a bad check in the running, enabled her to head off the little-fancied Riccarton candidate, Revolte, for second place. The favourite. 1 Lincoln Fair, was close up fourth after being just in front with 50 yards to run. Beau Son and Audacious were the first to show out, and when the field settled, down Tanith. Beau Son, Minion. Audaci-

ous, Devonogue, Lincoln Fair, Cipher, and Revolte were prominent. The order was little changed to the course proper, but at the distance Lincoln Fair had joined Tanith, with Castlebrae and Revolte in behind on the rails, Rhodesia and Beau Son next. Tanith weakened inside the final furlong, and Lincoln Fair and Revolte both challenged, but Castlebrfie finished too strongly for them and won by half a length from Cressida. which flashed up to beat Revolte by a head. Lincoln Fair was right up with the placed horses, closely followed by Luminate, Frances, and Fleetwood, with Minion, Grand Affair, and Tanith next. The winner is a three-year-old gelding by Robin Goodfellow from Arena, the dam'of The Champ and Lady Nahleen. Brilliant Two-year-old After being last away, Marilyn finished brilliantly over the last furlong to win the Juvenile Handicap easily by three lengths from the Riccarton filly, . Renowned, which finished splendidly in the straight. Night School and Helio also finished solidly for third and fourth respectively, just heading the favourite, Darius, which stopped badly inside the final furlong. Sea Lad, Darius, Battle Abbey, and Renowned were smartest out, but Battle Abbey and Renowned soon lost their position, and when the field settled clown Garry, Sea Lad, and Petre Mar were racing in line with Darius, Sir Royal, and Royal Cambria next, and Marilyn back on the fence. Darius was pushing through on the inside to challenge Garry coming into the straight, with Sea Lad dropping back, Marilyn, and Sir Royal next. Darius had Garry’s measure at the distance, but was soon challenged by Marilyn, which came through in brilliant style to win going away by three lengths. Darius started to tire, and Renowned came home solidly for second place. Both Night School and Helio made late appearances, and headed Darius short of the post. Battle Abbey headed the others. The winner has always bad the reputation of being above the average, but is unreliable at the barrier. Sage King’s Success

Sage King won the Halswell Handicap like a good horse, following the pacemaker Selas closely to the straight entrance where he came away to win comfortably by three lengths. Two littlefancied runners, Carmelita and Diameter, filled the minor places, b’oth finishing on strongly, with Diameter the more impressive Cincture, Grey Donne, Sage King, and Persuade were smartest out; but Selas soon ran through to the front to lead Sage King, Carmelita, Cincture, and Na< e Son. At the half mile Selas led Sage King by a half length, with Cincture,-Carmelita, Patmos, Native Son, and Superium next. Round to the straight entrance Sage King was doing better than Selas, and the latter dropped out as soon as the field straightened up. At the distance, Sage Kng was drawing out from Carmelita, Cincture, and Patmos. He came away in the last furlong to beat Carmelita by three lengths. Diameter was finishing better than the others over the last furlong, and -got up to Sheilwyn, also finishing on, by a head. Cincture was close up followed by Patmos, Superium, Rahine, Atmont, and Robingay.

Wicken and Mr T. Irving, on behalf of owners and trainers. AUSTRALIAN RACING NEW ZEALAND COLT , SHOWS SPEED (Rec. 6.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 12. Karachi, a fine-looking colt by the English sire, Neptune, now at the stud in New Zealand, ran impressively in the Juvenile Handicap, for colts and geldings, at Randwick yesterday. Prince Mohican took the lead at the half distance and appeared an easy winner inside the last half furlong. Karachi then staged an exceptionally fast finish, which just failed by a neck to catch Prince Mohican. The New Zealand colt was making his first public appearance, the only previous guide to his form being a win in the barrier trial last week. The owner, Mrs L. A. Bowler, refused an offer of £3OOO for Karachi after the race. Prince Mohican has had five starts for three firsts and two seconds. Result:— JUVENILE HANDICAP, Of £750. Five furlongs. PRINCE MOHICAN 9-0 .. Moore 1 Karachi 8-0 .. .. Faggotter 2 Except 8-0 .. .. .. Podmore 3 There were I'6 starters. Neck; length and a half. Time, lmin lisec.
