WELLINGTON MEETING

RACING

BRUCE’S BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE HOWE JUST WINS IN STAKES From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, January 12. The Wellington Racing Club s summer meeting opened at Trentham on Saturday In overcast and threatening weather, but except for one shower lasting about three minutes, the weather remained fine throughout the day. After a heavy shower early m the moming the going was easy J* 161 ’,® were one or two Patches onthe track where the going was not as firm as the remainder.

banked turns on the reconstructed mmmsr.y'ey? the of favourable "f as Particularly Interesting behaviour of the Held In the S??iK i . on^ a ’L‘ ilcap turning out of the biraigni. The horses were racing in fairly close order, and not one horse appeared to lose his position in the running the whole way round the turn. The photo-finish was also in operation for the first time, and with a number of close decisions during the day, free use was made of it.

There was a large attendance and the totalisator handled £182,637, as against £221,084 10s last year when the Wellington Cup was decided on the first day. The feature of the day’s racing was a sterling performance by Bruce in the Dominion Handicap. After looking to be in a well-nigh hopeless position with four furlongs to run, he revealed all the brilliance and stamina he showed as a three-year-old last autumn, and with L. J. Ellis working him through on the inside of the field in masterly fashion, he got clear at the distance and rapidly overhauled the leaders to win decisively by half a length. Outside fancies in Blanket and Dink’s Own both ran good races to fill the minor places. Merry Robin and Longsword both ran fair races.

In the race for positions from the start, Keening and Tavern Light reached the fiont and led out of the straight from Hormuz, Imperial, Merry Robin, Bruce, Lady Chips, Catterick Bridge, and Foxhaven, with Kashmiri, Barrage, and Flying Ace at the rear. Round towards the seven furlongs Tavern Light went clearly into the lead from Keening, Silver Rod, Imperial, Hormuz, Lady Chips, Catterick Bridge, Blanket, Camforth, Merry Robin, Dink’s Own, and Bruce (which had drifted in the running), with Riverview, Foxhaven, and Longsword next heading Kashmiri. Barrage, and Flying Ace. Approaching the half-mile Tavern Light still led Keening by a length, with another length to Hormuz and Imperial, then Dink’s Own. Silver Rod. and Flying Ace, with Merry Robin. Catterick Bridge, Longsword, and Bruce still giving a lot of ground. Tavern Light held her lead to the straight, followed by Keening. Hormuz, Blanket. Imperial, Merry Robin, and Dink’s Own. Blanket soon worked his way to the lead, closely attended by Hormuz and Dink’s Own; but Bruce came with a brilliant run, swept past Blanket with 50 yards to go, and won going away by half a length. Dink’s Own was a good length back third, with a + sir PJ, la £ . n J to Merry Robin, which just shaded Lobsword and Flying Ace for fourth. Then came Hormuz (which had every chance). Barrage, and Foxhaven, with next, the last to finish being Catterick Bridge and Lady Chips. > A Vigorous Finish

' The defection of Derene in the York Handicap caused Yasda to be installed a firm favourite, and in a vigorous finish he won by a neck from Tideless, which, always prominent, had disposed of the pacemaker, Lady Nahleen, at the rurlong. After a lot of milling round at the start, Al-Sirat was left flat-footed when the field moved off, and lost eight or 10 lengths. General Menteith, Battle Dance, and Yasda were slow away also. Lady Nahleen and Theocritus were the first to show ©ut from Gay Stroller, Peter Theio, and Tideless racing in line. At the half, the leaders were the same with Tideless, General Menteith, Gay Stroller, Peter Theio, Battle Dance, and Yasda next. There was little change to the straight, and at the distance Tideless and Lady Nahleen were doing a little better than Theocritus. Tideless had no sooner headed off Lady Nahleen when she was challenged by Yasda. which finished strongly to beat her by a neck. Lady Nahleen held on for third three lengths back, with Gay Stroller (which had every chance) fourth. Master Dash, after being a long way back early and having only Al-Sirat behind him at the four furlongs, finished strongly in fifth place. Then came Theocritus, Peter Theio. Langue d’Or, General - Menteith, and Battle Dance. Al-Sirat was not persevered with in the run home. After the running of the York Handicap •n inquiry was held into the running of Master Dash, and the rider, G. R. Tattersail, was suspended for one month for his handling of the horse.

Howe proved himself a versatile colt when he just won the Wellington Stakes in a close finish, with Ultimate second. Ultimate was slow away, and had none too good a passage to the distance. Howe’s last seven starts had been at a mile and beyond, and though he was perhaps a shade lucky to win he proved himself a courageous three-year-old. Lady Christine was one of the leaders into the straight, and was a fair third two lengths behind Ultimate. Ultimate and Kartikeya were slow away. Robin’s Reward, Colorado Maid, and Lady Christine were first out, and were soon racing practically in line with Howe in behind on the fence, and Treneere next. The order was practically the same to the straight, where Lady Christine took charge, but Howe challenged and soon had her measure. Howe Appeared to be in for a comfortable win. ut was challenged strongly by Ultimate over the last half-furlong, and just held on to win by a head. Lady Christine held on for third, with Kartikeya getting up to beat Colorado Maid for fourth. Robin’s Reward, Treneere, and Repudiate were well back. LINDEN HURDLES, Of £7OO.
