M.C.C. BATS AT HOBART
FIGHTING INNINGS BY EDRICH ENGLISH SIDE OUT FOR 278 (Rec. 12.30 am.) HOBART. Jan. 10. W. J. Edrich made a sparkling 82 in 84 minutes, including 14 fours and two sixes, saving England from severe trouble, in the match at Hobart against a combined team, including the test players, I. Johnson, K. R. Miller, A. L. Hassett, and S. G. Barnes. England had lost four for 53 before Fishlock and Edrich added 106 in 70 minutes. Edrich used his feet smartly and was hard hitting and aggressive. Fishlock played many good shots to score 52 in 157 minutes. He bore the brunt of the early onslaught and scored seven fours. Murfett, a fastish medium righthander, took three for 15 off the first nine overs, bowling swingers with good control. D. C. S. Compton was missed, and this wicket would have given him three for 4. The other batsmen were shaping poorly until A. V. Bedser and T. G. Evans added 70 in 52 minutes each, with Wright making his top score of the tour. Murfett’s bowling was punished later, and Clark, a slow spinner, was the most successful of the later bowlers. Scores:— M.C.C. First Innings P. A. Gibb, c Gardiner, b Murfett 1 L. B.
