Discussions aimed at a settlement of the meat dispute are taking place in Sydney to-day between members of the New South Wales Meat Board, presided over by the meat controller, Mr J. L. Shute, who was recalled from h J li ß ay Chiffey) the Prime Minister A mass meeting of butchers will take place to-night at the Town Hall, but because of extraordinary precautions to exclude anyone but members of the association, it is apparent that the meeting will be secret. More butchers’ shops were open today than at any time since the lockout started, but they would not represent more than 10 per cent, of the total. WORK ON BARQUE PAMIR WATERFRONT DISPUTE SPREADS (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 10. The dispute over the unloading of timber from the barque Pamir extended further to-day, bringing the total number of wharf labourers refusing work to more than 1200. At a meeting of the port committee, the watersiders remained firm on their demand Jor an increase from six to eight men m the ship’s hold, and a deadlock resulted. About 7000 men were called, but none would accept the call, leaving four inter-state snips without labour and a number of others without night labour. Among the ships unable to unload was one with a cargo of Tasmanian potatoes.
