NEW BAKERS AWARD NOW OPERATIVE

[P.A.) AUCKLAND, November 11.

The new award rejecting the bakery workers’ claim for a five-day week became operative to-day. but it is un-

likely that Auckland housewives will get fresh bread on Saturday mornings. No official union statement has yet been made whether the men will continue baking only five days a week, as at present, but there is little doubt that the men will decline to bake on Saturday mornings. At one of the largest Auckland bakeries the men held a stop-work meeting last night to consider the new award, and drivers held a meeting this morning. Saturday morning baking is to be considered at a special meeting of the Auckland Bakers’ Union on Wednesday.
