Identifying Former Pets During hearing of a sheep-stealing charge in the Supreme Court at Kamilton. a farmer witness said there was something distinctive in the appearance of a hand-reared lamb, which made possible its identification after it had been returned to the flock. The witness said the former pet appeared I less scared of human beings That was I one peculiarity that was noticeable even two years after a lamb had been returned to the flock. The wife of the ; witness said she had hand-reared many lambs, and all. oj nearly all. of them would show interest when she Spoke to them. Other were not responsive in any way. Sheep had retentive memories, and would remember. for instance, a hole in a fence that had been used in infancy to reach the i garden or backyard.
