GLOVE-MAKERS’ AWARD

ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW WAGE RATES

Alterations in wage rates have been announced by the Court of Arbitration in the Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury Otago, and Southland Glove Workers’ Award.

The new award provides that the minimum wage for female apprentices will range from £1 6d for the first six months to £1 17s 6d for the fourth six months. For the fifth six months, improvers will get £2 3s 6d, and this will rise to £3 for the fourth year. Journeywomen’s rates will be paid thereafter. The minimum rate for journeywomen will be £3 10s a week. A first-class glovecutter will receive £6 5s a week, and a second-class cutter £6 a week.

Junior males will be employed at rates ranging from £1 9s 6d for the first six months to £4 17s 6d for the eighth six months.

New provisions are also made for the bonus system. The award will come into force on October 1.

Fur Workers’ Award The Court has also announced alterations to the Northern, Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland Fur Workers’ Award.

The minimum wages for female apprentices will range from £1 4s 6d for the first six months to £2 9s for the sixth six months; the rate for fourth-year improvers will be £3, and wages thereafter at journeywomen’s rates. Workfers over 21 will be paid not less than £3 a week. The minimum wage for journeywomen has ben set at £3 10s, for cutters at £6 10s, and for nailers at £6 7s 6d.
