DENARY WINS NARROWLY

HARD FINISH WITH SPIORrf

Making her first appearance for the season, Denary had to fight hard to beat the three-yedr-old filly, Spiora, in the Raukapuka Hack Handicap at Orari. With a furlong to run. Deficiency made a run on the inside and looked to have both Spiora and Denary beaten, but they both fought on again, and Denary got in the last run to beat Spiora by a neck. Deficiency kept going and was only another neck away third. Riding tactics played a big part in Denary’s win. With Deficiency, Denary began best from Leeston, Spiora, Patmos, Liquidate, Stagesjtruck, and Gay Joy, the only horses to get away well. When the field settled down Leeston was in front from Deficiency and Spiora, with Denary, Stagestruck, Liquidate, and Gay Joy next. At the half mile, Spiora joined Leeston in the lead with Denary and Deficiency, "hnd Stagestruck and Gay Joy next. Leeston did not carry on at the straight entrance, and with a furlong and half to run, Spiora reached the front’with Denary and Gay Joy right-up with her. Deficiency challenged on the inner arid looked a winner commencing the last halffurlong, but Spiora fought on again only to be tackled by Denary again. The latter got the verdict in the last few strides, and Deficiency was almost on terms with them. Gay Joy was next, then came Here Hine, Te-Muka, Liquidate. Leeston, Wild Knock, Royal Vestments, Glance, and Patmos, which was always in the ruck after the first furlong. This was Denary’s third win, and she is still eligible to compete in hack company, her winning stakes totalling £475. On a firm track she is a good galloper. Showed Improved Form Improving on this third placing in a similar event at Ashburton, Montello d’Oro won the Rangitata Hurdles narrowly but well. It was his first win as a hurdler, and for the comparatively inexperienced lumper he is, he gave a creditable display. He was fairly well back in the running until four furlongs from home when he moved up into third place. He challenged the pacemaker, Big Top, approaching the straight entrance, and after getting his measure, withstood a solid challenge from As Required, and won by a neck. The favourite, Foxspear, got on the heels of Big Top early in the race and lost his rider. Montello d’Oro was a little slow at the start, and the first to show out were Bank Raid and Big Top, which soon had several lengths’ break on Court Dress and As Required, with Montello d’Oro and Battle Chief bringing up the rear. Bank Raid and Big Top increased their lead along the back, but with four furlongs to go Montello o’Oro started to close on the leaders. Round the top turn, Bank Raid started to weaken, and Montello d’Oro raced up to be on terms with Big Top at the last hurdle, and though challenged by As Required in the run home, held on to win by a neck. Big Top was a length further back, then came Court Dress, which was ridden by his owner, Bank Raid and Battle Chief. Favourite Had Every Chance The favourite, Baracha, had every chance in the Ohapi Stakes, but could only finish fourth. The winner. ’Denim, a brother to Denary, Density, and Botariy, was patiently ridden, and when he put in his challenge won decisively. Denim is now five years old and is not as good a type of horse as his relatives. From an indifferent start Baradha, Lord Robin, Swift Action, Boon Companion, Liquidate, Philary, and Denim got aw’ay well, and before a furlong had been covered it was obvious that they were the only runners that had a chance. Lord Robin soon took over the pacemaking - from Baracha and Liquidate, with Denim and Boon Companion, Swift Action, Philary, and Hotfoot at the head of the others. At the four furlongs Liquidate went Into the lead, and he was closely attended by Baracha, Lord Robin, Denim, Boon Companion, Philary, Swift Action, and Palomino, which was on the outer. Baracha joined Liquidate as they turned for home, but once they straightened up for the run home could not carry on. Liquidate carried on for a short distance, but Denim soon had his measure and finished on solidly to win by a length. Philary came with a late run for third after her rider had to stop riding her momentarily when she ran in undpr the whip short of the final furlong, and checked Lord Robin. Baracha was a poor fourth, then came Aldair, Boon Companion, Kite High, Swift Action, Victory Bells, and Lance Tor.
