Britiah Golf Challonre Match—At the end of 36 boles in a 72-hole fourball challenge match, which is being played at the Southport courae, Dai Rees and Charles Ward lead Locke and von Nida, 3 up. It is golf’s first big money match in England for many years, being for £5OO a side. The match was all square al the ninth, but Rees and Ward ran to 4 up at the eighteenth. With a run of birdies von Nida and Locke had squared the match again at the 27th, but fine putting gave Rees and Ward the lead at. the end of the day’s play. The golf was brilliant and putting generally decided the issue at most of the 36 holes. Rees and Ward had 18 birdies and Locke and von Nida 15. —London, Sept 17. World Heavy-weight Boxing Title.— It Is expected that 30,000 persons will pay 300,000 dollars to see the world heavy-weight title bout between Joa Louis and Tami Mauriello at the Yankee Stadium. Mauriello, at 23, is nine years younger than Louis. He has had more fights and boasts of more knockouts than Louis, but the opinion is general that only stark carelessness on w part of Louis will jeopardise his title.—New York, September 18. British Boxer’s Win.—The British heavy-weight champion, Bruce Woodcock, 13st 101 b, knocked out the American, Gus Lesnevitch. the world cruiser- : weight title-holder, 12st 13jlb. in the eighth round of their 10-round contest at Harringay. The winning blow was a right hook. Lesnevitch’s left eye was almost closed at the end. Woodcock fought to a well-ordered plan and gained superiority through skilful use of his left—London.
