DISTURBANCES IN SYDNEY
LIBERALS* ELECTION MEETING SYDNEY, September 18, Another man was arrested after a scuffle with tha police during the visit by the Liberal Party leader (Mr R. G- Menzies) to Labour strongholds in Sydney industrial areas. At Five Dock, stink bombs were placed near the stage and under windows, but the smell was not unpleasant enough to clear the hall Fifty men. whom the Liberal Party said were strangers to the district, ar> rived in cars. The man arrested, who was a persistent interjector, struggled violently with the police, smashing the press table. The police confiscated a red flag which was waved in the centre oi the hall Mr Menzies was accorded a fair hearing. Labour members have deplored the hooliganism and intolerance shown at Mr Menzies's Darlinghurst meeting the previous night, when bags of bolts were thrown and the public address system was sabotaged. All parties have expressed themselves in favour of free speech as the right of any candidate. The Liberal Party blames the Communists and not Labour for the disturbance.
