CONFERENCE ON PALESTINE

JEWISH LEADERS MAY SEE BEVIN

LONDON, September 17. Three leaders of the Jewish Agency Executive have been authorised to propose to Mr Bevin participation* by the Jews in the London conference on Palestine, says Reuter’s diplomatic correspondent.

A spokesman said that the three leaders. Dr. Nahum Goldman, Professor Brodetsky, and Mr Berl Locker, might see Mr Bevin as soon as they returned from Paris, where they flew for a consultation with Mr David BenGurion.

The correspondent understands that the Jewish Agency Executive believes that the British plan for provincial autonomy has been killed by Arab opposition, anfi that the time has now come for discussion of alternatives, including partition, which has agency support. In Jerusalem a Jewish Agepcy spokesman said: “From this end it looks as if the British Government Is prepared to reconsider its decision regarding the leaders detained in the La trim camp." It is stated in London that Scotland Yard is taking special precautions after receiving an anonymous communication threatening certain Jews who are members ox a non-Zionist group that their lives are endangered if they attend the Palestine Conference.

The Palestine Arab Committee is going from Jerusalem to Alexandria on Friday in response to an urgent summons by the Grand Mufti to discuss the London conference. The secretary of the Arab Higher Executive, Khalidi, said that this did not -mean that the Palestine Arabs were recon-

sidering their decision not to attend the London talks. The Grand Mufti would not go to London even if he were asked, but an invitation to him was specifically necessary. In Jerusalem, police and troops for the first time in years to-day carried out searches and identification checks in Arab quarters of Jerusalem. They discovered some daggers. A few Arabs are reported to have been detained.
