OAMARU CLUB

TROTTING

MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR TROTTERS The Oamaru Trotting Club has been quick to take advantage of the new provisions of the handicapping system, which allow trotters to win over sprint distances without affecting their assessment for races of a mile and a half or more; and, besides the usual events for maiden and improving pacers, the club’s programme for the Labour Dav meeting includes a 2min 52sec class race of one mile and a quarter for trotters. The stake of £lOOO is the same as is being given the pacers in the 2min 40sec class Hannon Memorial, and should attract a large field. At present the following horses are available for the event:—Casablanca, Ord?r ai 2 ce ’ „ steel Kin £- Sure Lady, Hidden Note, Fantom, Forewarned, Rangefinder, Royal Worthy, Bush Laddie, Douglas MeElwyn, Lady Scott, Will Cary, and Sea Max. The Innovation of placing three events for trotters on a programme is welcomed by those who hold that the standard of trotting in New Zealand can be raised only by giving more opportunities to the trotters to race. If other clubs follow the lead and the result is as predicted, then the action of the Oamaru club may well mark a new era for the squaregaiters. ' Jottings t Douglas McElwyn, which has not raced smee January 1, 1945, is now owned by L. F. Berkett, who is preparing him for ings trotters events at tbe spring meetAfter his fine display to finish in second place to Golden Amazon in the St. Albans Handicap at the New Brighton meeting on September 7, Calumella is sure to be one of the favourites for the Introductory Handicap at the Nevr Brighton Trotting Club s meeting. at. Addington next week. S. A. Edwards’s candidate, Tolan, should race wen over the miie and a quarter in the Geraldine Trot at Geraldine on Saturday. Desert Lad, which is now trained by B. A. McMillan, Tamahere, raced consistently for two wins and six minor platings » *. season « and be should be prominent on Saturda tern '° er Handicap at Auckland Scholarship’s display at Ashburton entitles him to consideration from the scratch mark of the Orari Handicap field at Geraldine thft week. Speedy Type W. Flute, who trains his team at Addington, has Donna’s Pride and Highland Date engaged at the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting; and Highland Dale appears to have good prospects of winning at least one race on the trip. A gelding by Sandydale from Myra Parrish, he was placed in two of his four starts as a three-year-old last season. His platings were both recorded at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting on July 6, where he impressed when he finished close up in third place to Scintillante and Scholarship in the second division of the Trial Handicap, and in fourth plaee to Super Globe, Abel Tasman, and Mischief in the first division of the Spotswood Handicap. Myra Parrish, the dam of Highland Date, is by Guy Parrish from Imperial Logan, by Logan Pointer from Imperial Princess, by Prince Imperial from the Specification mare, Problem. Paid His Way Technique, which paid his way with a win and six minor platings last season, is now in W. R. Buttis team at Templeton. An aged gelding, he is by Jack Potts from Rose Logan, the dam of other winners in Windsor Lass, Mortlake, Knapdale Lass, and Rose Volo. Technique’s last success was in the Christmas Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on December 22. Driven by J. B. Pringle, he began well to take the lead early, and he hung on to win from Ingle Belmer, Vimy Ridge, and Dillondale. If Butt can persuade him to show that form again he should win good races. Well-bred Mare The four-year-old mare, Loyal Guest, is back in work in L. O. Thomas’s team at Addington, and she looked well when working at Addington this week. A wellbred mare, she showed encouraging form last season when she followed Paddy Potts home in the first division of the Duvauchelle Handicap Trot at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting on March 17; and after that effort she was turned out for a spell. Loyal Guest’s breeding is of interest, as she is by Grattan Loyal from Tondeleyo, which left a smart pacer in Margaret Hall to Dillon Hall. Bred by F. Holmes and* Miss P. Norton, Tondeleyo is by Wrack from Estella Amos, and is a sister to Indianapolis, which won the New Zealand Trotting Cup in 1934, 1935, and 1936. Noble Lady at Addington Noble Lady, which is now being trained at Addington by V. Albom, showed some ability in a work-out at Addington on Tuesday morning when she settled down to trot, and if she leaves the mark smoothly she may finish in the money at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting next week. An aged mare by Nobleman, Noble Lady is out of Wild Chenault, by Peter Chenault from Wild Child, by Wildwood Jnr. from Lady Child, by Rothschild from the Young Irvington mare Ptarmigan. Showy Colt

P. C. Clough was present at Addington on Tuesday morning with Sure Spec, which he is training for Messrs Hornsby and Tapper, and with a Grattan Loyal colt, which took the eye as a likely type. A Winning Family Besides Chinook, R. Hamilton is working a filly by Gamble from Laurene Wood (the dam of Checkmate) and a trotter by Lusty Volo from a sister to Echo, which was also successful as a trotter. To Wrack, Echo left a family of winning trotters, including Resound, Tyrone Lass, Discord, Lament, and Echoist. Bred by Mr M. Friedlander. Ashburton, Echo is by El Carbine from Wood Nymph, by Wildwood from Miss Poole, by Blackwood Abdallah from an Arab mare. N.Z. Metropolitan T.C.
