American’s Opinion of Australia

An American serviceman’s impression of Australian cities was quoted to members of the Christchurch Rotary Club yesterday by Mr A. R. Cutler, High Commissioner for Australia. The impression, he said, was not quite fair, but not entirely inept. The American opinion was expressed as follows: “Brisbane said: ‘Better have a beer’; Sydney said: ‘How much money have you got?’; Melbourne said: ‘What school did you go to?’; Adelaide said: ‘What church do you go to’; Perth, at the end of the line, said: ‘Well, you’ve had a tiring time. Better have another beer.’*
