VICEREGAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 17. The Governor-General and Lady Freyberg, accompanied by Flight Lieutenant Michael Cole, have left Wellington for Wanganui. They will return on Thursday evening. Mr W. L. Dulieu, who has been manager of the Temuka branch of the Bank of Australasia for the last five and a half years, has received notice of his transfer on promotion as manager of the Upper Hutt branch of the bank. He will be succeeded by Mr L. J. Rowell, at present manager of the Stratford branch. Mr J. D. Bellamy last evening tendered his resignation to the Christchurch Drainage Board as superintendent of the sewage farm, because of illness. A tribute to the services of Mr J R. Dench (retiring president to the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce), was paid by the newly-elected president, Mr H. C. Hurst, at the annual meeting of the chamber last evening.
The Rev. A. L. Haddon, principal of the Church of Christ College, Dunedin. returned to New Zealand on Monday after a month in Australia, where he addressed the World Council of Churches in Sydney and the regional committee m Melbourne. Dr. Jesse Bader, of America, and Mr Haddon were the overseas guest speakers at the Centennial Conference of Churches of Christ, held at Adelaide. Canterbury County boy scout officers who will attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Boy Scouts’ Association in Wellington from September 20 to 22 are as follows:—Sir Joseph Ward (county commissioner), and Messrs F. Melhuish t assistant county commissioner for cub training). A. W. V. Reeve (county secretary), H. E. Collins (assistant county commissioner for Rover scouts). F. Mclvor (field commissioner). E. P. Combellack (district commissioner, Ngaio district), and C- Ferris (district commissioner. Rimu district). The death of Mr F. I. Cowlishaw was recorded with regret by the Christchurch Drainage Board last evening. The chairman (Mr H. G. Livingstone) said that the original firm of Garrick and Cowlishaw, of which Mr Cowlishaw later was a partner, had carried out all legal work since the original drainage act for Christchurch was drawn in 1876. Mr Cowlishaw was a good servant and a valued personal friend of members. Sympathy was also expressed with relatives of the late Mr Arthur T. Smith, a former member.
