FOOD SAVING

Sir, —The Hon. D. G. Sullivan has just announced that we in New Zealand are to have more confectionery, aerated waters, and ice cream (pure luxuries). Many are asking for more meat and butter, though we are already living on- the fat of the land, comparatively speaking. Against this, we have the declaration prominently displayed in Cathedral square, Christchurch, that “every five seconds a human being dies from starvation.” We are continually being urged to “give coupons,” etc., in order that a little more food may be sent to Britain, where many of our own people, though not actually starving, are not very far from it. The position seems almost ludicrous. If a little relief can be given, it should surely go to those who need it and not to us, who do not need it. Have we New Zealanders completely lost all our sense of decency and fair play?—-Yours, etc., GEORGE INGRAM. September 15, 1946.
