CONCRETE SLEEPERS

TESTS BY RAILWAY DEPARTMENT (P.A.) S WELLINGTON, Sept. 16. t The Railways Department will begin testing a new type of reinforced concrete sleeper. A short length of straight main line track just south of Levin will be relaid with 48 prestressed concrete sleepers. Recently, submitted for trial by their English manufacturers, they are approximately three times as heavy as Australian hardwood sleepers, which are in general use in New Zealand. So that the performance of the concrete may be measured correctly against that of hardwood, a sequence of 144 partly used sleepers will. be lifted from the present track and replaced by new ones in three groups, 48 new sleepers of hardwood, 48 concrete, and 48 hardwood in that order. It is claimed by the makers that the prestressed sleepers will not crack. Any large demand for concrete sleepers would have to be met by manufacture in New Zealand.
