GOVERNMENT OF INDONESIA

RESUMPTION OF TALKS (Rec. 730 p.m.) BATAVIA, Sept 18. The Lieutenant-Governor of the Netherlands East Indies (Dr. van Mook), in a letter to the Prime Minister of Indonesia (Mr Sjahrir). suggested that negotiations on the future of the Indies should be resumed as soon as a commission headed by the Dutch Prime Minister (Professor W. Schermerhorn) arrived. Dr. van Mook said that if problems were approached in a peaceful manner it might be possible to find a common ground for an agreement eliminating the existing suspicions, guaranteeing recognition of the Indonesians’ desire for freedom, and reaffirming the close connexions between the Netherlands and Indonesia.
