BUSH FIRES IN N.S.W.
HEAT WAVE STRIKES SYDNEY
(Rec. 11 p.ni.) SYDNEY, Sept,' 12. Bush fires threatened many Sydney and Blue Mountain homes to-day, when a heat wave, backed by a blustering northwest wind, sent the temEerature to 87.4 degrees at 1 p.m., the ighest for September since 1944, A blanketing dust haze Interfered with air schedules. Fire brigades were busy with bush fires at many points, but so far no houses have suffered. The entire population of Hazel•brook, in the Blue Mountains, is fighting *a fire which is travelling before a wind on a two-mile front.
Searing winds have caused further stock losses in the drought country, where temperatures of up to 93 degrees were recorded. In many areas spring lambing has been written oft as a total loss. Ewes, not having milk for their lambs, desert them and go foraging. The drought is considered to be far worse than that of 1902, and authorities say that there is worse to come. Motor and rail transport is in constant use shifting stock to southern pastures, but when unloading takes place up to 12 sheep are found dead in each truck.
