FIRE HAZARDS
PRESENT FACTORY CONDITIONS BUILDING RESTRICTIONS CRITICISED The suggestion that “the Government’s attention be drawn to conditions arising in factories, making for fire hazards, as an indirect result of building restrictions,” was made by Mr H. C. Urlwin at the meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association’s council last evening. Mr Urlwin, whose comment was prompted by reference to recent serious fires, said that, because of building restrictions, floor space needed for storage was being turned over more and more to production work, and that raw materials were being jammed more and more into temporary buildings of a type not exactly suitable from the fire hazard viewpoint. Many firms. Mr Urlwin said, must be doing this because they could not get the storage space for stock.
It would be advisable, therefore. Mr Urlwin said, if the federation could bring the point to the notice o'f the Government, and ask for more consideration when permits to put up fireproof buildings were being sought. The council passed a resolution of sympathy with Messrs Duckworth. Turner, Ltd., and Messrs Packer and Jones, Ltd., in their recent fire losses, and offering any practicable help which the firms might require.
