BAKERS’ ATTITUDE NOT DECIDED
This morning representatives of the bakers met Mr Straehey, after which the bakers’ chairinan said that they had been asked not to say anything until Mr Straehey had spoken in the House. The executive of thfe National Association of Master Bakers met today and representatives of the association were to see Mr Straehey again
While bakers in some parts of England have decided to work under the rationing scheme, others will sell bread without coupons. The “Daily Telegraph” says: ‘‘A confused situation exists in the bakery trade throughout the country about the Jbrse to be pursued. The president of ®e National Association of Master
Bakers (iWr Mitchell), who led a delegation to two mfefetings with Mr Strachey, said that if Mr Straehey were foolish enough to introduce rationing it wotild not last long—at most about three rrionths. “Dfetisions reached by provincial bakers’ associations at their meetings include:—the Leicester, Brighton, and Hove bakers are giving the scheme a trial, although they think it will break down; Pontypool has decided unanimously against handling the scheme; the Sheffield bakers are selling bread ?md confectionery without coupons; the Birmingham and Eastbourne bakers will attempt to carry out the order, but believe a dislocation of supplies is possible.”
