ARCHBISHOP’S CALL TO ANGLICAN LAYMEN
(P.A.) AUCKLAND. May 8. A challenge to laymen to ad \®”" turous action was issued by the Primate of New Zealand (Archbishop West-Watson) in an address at the annual meeting of the Auckland Diocesan Churchmen’s Association. The Church used to be the centre of all active fife, business, social, ana religious, involving town, city, and village in England, and was placed in the dead centre of the community, but to-day it is no longer the centre,” the Archbishop said. The Church has been pushed out to the circumference. _ Anglican laymen as a body had been unwilling to take responsibility for lapsed Christians, but in future they must give their witness and do more for the Church within the new centres of life which were developing. It appeared that 10 per cent, of the population was for the Church. 10 against, and 80 per cent, indifferent. He called on Anglican laymen to rouse • themselves to the seriousness of the problem and use their power to overcome it. •
