SALE OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

CONCERN EXPRESSED OVER 40-HOUR WEEK Concern was expressed by several members at the annual meeting of the Christchurch Tomato and Stone Fruit Growers’ Association as to the ability of the commercial gardening industry to absorb the full implications of the 40-hour week legislation. Similarly it was felt that the reduction of shopping hours to 40 would have repercussions, it being considered that there woulr be less fruit and vegetables retails within the shorter hours. There would also be a considerable loss of otherwise marketable fruit, which would occur through over-ripeness, it was stated. The association felt that price control ofjfrutt and vegetables should be removed entirely and carried the following resolution: “That it is the considered opinion of this association that the time has arrived when the Government should be requested to remove harassing controls and onerous restrictions, the continuance of which is impeding the production of fruit and vegetables.” The following officers were elected: president. Mr C. E. Pone; vice-presi-dents, Messrs F. C. Williams and F. Zimmerman; secretary-treasurer, Mr N- L. R. Ferguson; executive, Messrs A Bloxham (to an advisory capacity), R. C. Harrow, W. le Comte, N. Goldsbury, K. I. Watson, F. Knipe. and G. W. Walsh.
